Free Track Intelligence: Fontwell & Warwick

As a warm-up for the upcoming campaign, here is how we evaluate two of today’s jump fixtures.

Fontwell Park

Fontwell is a tight, sharp, undulating venue where track-specificity is everything. The Chase course is uniquely laid out as a figure-of-eight, forcing horses to jump fences while changing leads and navigating sharp, sweeping turns both downhill and uphill. “Bridle horses”—travelers that look slick in open space but lack grit—frequently find themselves out of rhythm here. Look specifically for agile, handy types with proven track record at Fontwell or similarly sharp, turning courses like Plumpton.

Warwick

Warwick is a left-handed, kite-shaped track where the Chase course requires a specific jumper profile. The defining feature is the sequence of 5 fences down the back straight, which come up in rapid succession with minimal time to regroup between obstacles. It heavily favors natural jumpers who take a cut at their fences and bold, prominent racers who can establish rhythm early. The Hurdle track demands agile, nimble types who can carry momentum around the tight, undulating bends.

WARWICK 3:05 – SIXPACK (7/4)

TRALEE GIRL arrives off a Maiden hurdle win at Sedgefield where, after quickening clear on the bend, she needed a firm ride from Harry Skelton after wandering around. The 4yo filly was sent off at 4/9 that day, having previously been turned over at 1/4 at Fakenham. While good ground suits and her 75 Flat rating produced 4 wins from 14 outings, her hurdle form remains somewhat jumpy.

By contrast, SIXPACK has progressed 13 lbs on the Flat (75 to 88) since his lone hurdling outing. The James Owen-trained gelding bagged three wins in that sphere from 1m4f to 1m6f across varying ground conditions. James Owen excels at conditioning Flat recruits for the winter code; provided SIXPACK jumps adequately on return, he holds far more upside than the favorite and ought to take this out.

WARWICK 3:40 – KI WOO (2/1)

SNIPE has won 5 of his 30 starts from 2m to 3m1f, but he has never scored on ground faster than Good-to-Soft. Today’s Good-to-Firm surface makes the Skelton runner the rightful outsider of the field.

FEVER DREAM ticks a few surface-level boxes: he receives weight around, is proven over the track, goes well fresh, and has won on fast ground. However, Christian Williams’ 8yo is thoroughly exposed and looks poorly treated on his current handicap mark.

Danish-bred DUNKERQUE enjoyed a solid summer over fences for Jennie Candlish, winning 4 of 6 and climbing from 115 to 132. That said, those wins came at lesser “gaff” tracks, and Warwick’s 5 rapid back-straight fences will place a far sterner test on his jumping accuracy.

KI WOO stands out clearly. While carrying top weight after a 3-month break, the 6yo remains progressive and jumps with natural fluency. His best form has come on decent ground, and both the distance and track layout fit his profile nicely. He looks the solid wager in a beatable line-up.

FONTWELL 14:47 – JET SMART (7/2)

LERMOOS LEGEND is a 9-time winner from 52 starts, but his highest winning handicap mark stands at 109—today he races off 113. An 11yo with 52 runs under his belt is unlikely to suddenly find hidden improvement.

TAPLEY moves from Suzy Smith to the Gary/Josh Moore yard as a 7-time winner. While he scored off this mark back in October 2024, his subsequent two victories came off 3 lb and 10 lb lower marks with a 7 lb claimer taking the weight off. He could win on class alone, but only by default.

AMERICAN LAND is a 5-time hurdle winner who tried fences once in October 2024, failed to adapt, and was promptly reverted to hurdles. He looks better handicapped over timber, and taking a short price on him over Fontwell’s tricky figure-of-eight chase circuit carries unnecessary risk.

JET SMART represents the sensible value play at 7/2. The 8yo won 10 of his 17 Point-to-Points and holds a 2/10 record over fences. He comes off a respectable 2nd of 6 in his latest outing, for which he was nudged up 2 lbs. He retains scope for progress over fences, handles this layout, and faces three rivals with major questions to answer.
