ASIAN HANDICAPS - EXPLAINED!

In 1998 Indonesian Bookmaker Joe Phan asked journalist Joe Saumarez Smith to find an English phrase for what was known has Hang Seng, the phrase Joe came up with was ‘Asian Handicap’ (AH). Over the coming years Asian Handicap betting became very popular has punters endeared to its very competitive nature.

Asian Handicap bookmakers actually welcome winners. The reason for that are the dynamics of two way betting allow for easy movement of betting lines. This in turn guarantees the Bookmaker a long term profit, irrelevant of the outcome.

High volumes and low margins make Asian Handicap betting attractive to high staking and serious punters. To give some idea of market size, Spiegel magazine did an interview with the owners of IBC . They were told the company operating from the Philippines had turnover of US$45 Billion in 2011, with a profit margin of 0.67% ($300 million).

Note: to access the offer of IBC one needs to use a broker, their offer is not available through traditional channels!!

Other interesting facts when comparing Asian Handicap to traditional bookmakers:

-  AH average just 2% juice, (1.96 - 1.96), and on bigger games this may sink to 1.5% (1.97 – 1.97). Traditional Bookmakers margins vary between 5 and 15%!

-  AH focus purely on single betting, and their average hold is just 1%. Traditional bookmakers expect to win 5-12%

-  AH bookmakers have no need to use traditional marketing methods, their product is ultra competitive and sells itself.

You might have noticed we use the words ‘AH bookmakers’, but not all are Asian. Pinnaclesports and 5dimes are examples, the people running the show are American. AH is just a terminology!

The lesson

Bookmakers traditionally offer football betting with 3 possible outcomes, (Home/Draw/Away), AH betting reduces this to two. The idea is to balance the game for betting purposes, the balance is achieved by giving the outsider a theoretical advantage.

Below you will find an easy example and a comparison between traditional Bookmaking and AH.

We will give the away team/outsider a 0.5 goal start:

Traditional bookmaker odds

 Team A  Draw  Team B

  1,90      3,40   4,30  Converted % 52.63+ 29.42+23.26=105.31%  ( 94.96%) inverted =5% takeout

Asian handicap

Team A (-0.5 goals)  odds 1.96 Betting percent 51.02%

Team B (+0.5 goals)  odds 1.96 Betting percent 51.02%

Total percent  102.04% (98.00%) inverted = 2% takeout

As the bookmakers theoretical takeout is reduced from 5% to 2% the odds increase for an home win from 1,90 to 1,96 (more competitive)

The away team winning with +0.5 goals is also offered at 1.96 (AH), let’s compare with the traditional bookmaker odds, first we need to convert odds for X2 (Draw and away)

The odds of 3.40 draw (29.42%) and 4.30 away (23.26%) converted into percent = (29.42 + 23.26 = 52.66%), the equation for calculating these accumulated odds, 100 / 52.66 = odds 1.899 (rounded to 1.90).

Traditional Bookmaker odds: Home 1.90 X2 (+0.5) 1.90

AH Odds  1.96  (+0.5) 1.96

Asian handicaps are offered in the following formats:  0 - ¼ - ½ - ¾ -1.0, the rounds are logical 0 - 1 – 2 – 3 - 4 etc, with the full ball it is possible to get what is known as a push (money back/refund), if the game is drawn when taking into account the theoretical advantage/disadvantage, example:

Team A (0)  Team B (0)  (+/- 0) If the game finishes as a draw 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, the result is a ‘push’.

Team A (-1)  Team B (+1), there will be a ‘push’ if Team A win by 1 goal, ie 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and so on

Team A (-2.0) Team B (+2.0), there will be a ‘push’ if the game ends 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 and so on

The above is relatively easy to understand, even for the novice. The home team wins if it manages to cover the handicap, team B wins if the theoretical advantage added to the score puts them ahead.

Slightly more difficult to understand is the quarter (1/4) ball, this is actually a what is known as a split bet (2 bets), example:

Team A (-0.25)  Team B (+0.25) this can also be written Team A (0) Team A (-0.5)/ Team B (0) Team B (+0.5), the bet of 100 would be split into 50@ ‘0’ and 50@ -/+ ‘0.5’ depending which option you took (Home/Away).

You have bet team 100 on team A to cover the -0.25 goals:

The result is 0-0 (or 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 etc), you have 2 bets to settle:

50 Team A (0) = Push/return 50 (game was a draw, money refunded at level ball)

50 Team A (-0.5) = lost (They needed to win, draw or lose = lost)

You have bet team 100 on team A to cover the +0.25 goals:

You have 2 bets to settle:

50 Team B (0) = push 50 returned

50 Team B (+0.5) = won 50 @ odds of 1,96 = 98.00

Team B in the draw would give you 50 (returned) + 98 (from the win part +0.5) = 148

If team A win, the whole bet on team A is won.

If team A lose, the whole bet on team A is lost

If team B win, the whole bet on team B is won.

If team B lose, the whole bet on team B is lost!

The complication level increases as we bring in the ¾ (0.75 ) ball, again the bet is split (2 bets):

Team A (-0.75) Team B (+0.75) = Team A (-0.5) Team A (-1.0), Team B (+0.5) Team B (+1.0)

If the game finishes 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 the following will apply:

50 Team A (-0.5) bet wins using odds 1.96 = 98

50 Team A (-1.0) = push 50 returned

Team A split (half won/half returned)= 148

50 Team B (+0.5) bet lost = 0

50 Team B (+1.0) the bet is drawn, push = 50 returned

Team B returns 50 from original stake of 100

If team A win by more than one all bets on team A are won

If team B draw or win all bets on Team B are won

Logic is same for:

 1.25 = 1.0 and 1.5

1.75 = 1.50 and 2.0

The stronger the favorite (shorter price), bigger the handicap, idea is to balance the game, make it possible for both parties to win the handicap.
