BETTING PREVIEW - SOUTHAMPTON vs LIVERPOOL - EFL CUP

At this stage (semi final) of the competition we can safely assume both clubs will want it. In fact, this is Southampton’s chance of a meal ticket into next seasons Europa league. Afterall, they will struggle to qualify through the league, and the FA cup is still at the early stages.

Under the prevailing circumstances, we believe ex-Nice coach Claude Puel has done a good job in charge of Southampton. We say that because the Saints sold their best player Sadio Mane to Liverpool before the campaign started, and striker Graziano Pelle left for China. Replacing that pair with the likes of  Nathan Redmond and Sofiane Boufal were less than ideal, and has a result the hosts have struggled to score. In fact, with 19 goals from 20 league matches, they are the third lowest scorers in the league.

Other issues occupying St Marys include captain Jose Fonte wanting away, and it’s now rumoured that Virgil van Dijk also wants to go. For the record the Portuguese player Fonte was left out of the squad at the weekend, and that will be the case again this evening.

With regards to team news, Southampton are still without top scorer Charlie Austin. Boufal, Jake Hesketh, Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy are others who won’t be available this evening. However, on a positive note Cedric Soares should have recovered from his recent head injury in time to be considered. It’s also worth noting coach Puel made another eight changes at the weekend, saving his best players for this semi final first leg!

If Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was offered the league title and nothing else now, he would surely take it. At the weekend Klopp sent out his B-Team to face league two side Plymouth. Pre match odds of 1.10 suggested Klopp’s team were big favourites, but it ended 0-0. The fazit of that game was last ditched defending from the then visitors, and the Reds only managing to test the goalkeeper four times.

The Reds have played back to back draws, and earlier in the season their league match ended 0-0. Liverpool are expected to start this game with Loris Karius in goal. Skipper Jordan Henderson won’t resume training until tomorrow. And, others missing include Sadio Mane (int duty), Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Adam Bogdan and Danny Ings.

PREDICTION

Klopp will be aware that his team have to play Manchester United at the weekend. With that in mind and this being a two legged, he’s again likely to tamper with his starting XI. The Saints traditionally do well against Liverpool, and last season they won the league match at St Mary’s 3-2. In fact, they also drew on the road at Anfield, so they are unlikely to be a pushover this evening. We expect Puel to go with his absolute best team, and that could be enough to get the win. With a +0.25 thrown in for good measure, this is a must bet!
