Earlier on in qualification Jana Fett beat Veronica Cepede Royg in three sets. However, following withdrawals from other players, Royg made it into the first round courtesy of a lucky loser pass.

Since then the girl from Paraguay enjoyed back to back wins against Cindy Burger and Andrea Petkovic. On paper the win over Petkovic looks particularly solid, since the 55th ranked German was odds of around 1.16. However, we should mention that the scoring in that match was like a roller coaster. In fact, Veronica won the first set 6-3, but she lost the second 0-6. At that stage Petkovic appeared well on top, so it was surprising to see the 24 year old fight back to win the third 6-4. However, from what we witnessed Cepede Royg outstayed her opponent, and Petkovic showed the same mental weakness that stopped her progressing to her true potential.

Like many South Americans Cepede Royg is better on a clay surface, so wins on hard court can be taken has a bonus. We very much doubt she’s good enough to reverse recent form with the improving Fett!

The 20 year old is going from strength to strength, and wins over Francesca Schiavone and Lizette Cabrera were emphatic enough. As a past finalist of the Australian (junior) open, Fett clearly enjoys playing in Australia. The young Croatian has had to sacrifice playing at the Australian open by staying in Hobart. In fact, she even admitted to contemplated losing the match against Cabrera. In a post match press conference Jana said "All day I was thinking: should I play good, should I play bad, should I go, what should I do?”. ‘’But then I came on the court and I couldn't play bad. I started playing good and I wanted to keep going’’.

We should also mention Fett is ranked in the 300’s for a simple reason, and that’s because she missed six months of last year with a wrist injury.

We expect Fett to impose her aggressive style here, because this girl is heading for the top fifty this season. And, after sacrificing the Aussie open, she will want to go a long way in this competition!
