WTA INDIAN WELLS

At this year’s Adelaide, Kai Kanepi leveled the head-to-head (1-1) with Aliaksandra Sasnovich. After losing the first set, the Estonian went on to win that first-round match 4/6 6/1 6/4.

Subsequently, the 37-year-old won just two of her seven matches. Not to mention, she exited in the first round of Melbourne and Dubai by losing against Kimberley Birrell & Viktorija Tomova.

During her heyday, Kanepi reached a career-high rank of 15. However, that was in 2012, and she starts this tournament ranked 51.

On that note, Kaia played Indian Wells 13 times, and in 2022 she made it to the third round. For the record, on her other 12 visits here, she wasn’t able to progress further than her 2nd opponent. For the purpose of evaluation, we can mark down Kanepi’s chance of doing anything special at this tournament.

Meanwhile, Aliaksandra Sasnovich is just 3/6 this year. As a consequence of dropping points at both Melbourne and Doha, the 29-year-old rank slipped from 30 to 44.

Nevertheless, Sasnovich is usually well-prepared, and she’s sure to have practiced hard for the challenge ahead. Also, these courts and conditions won’t be an issue for the player from Belarus, and the proof is in the pudding!

In 2021, Aliaksandra made it past Osorio Serrano, Emma Raducanu, and Simona Halep to reach the 4th round of Indian Wells. We can also point to earlier tournament wins over Anett Kontaveit and Magda Linette, and taking Caroline Wozniacki (2018) to three sets.

In summary, while both players have a bit to prove, Sasnovich can be trusted to be ready. Since she’s not getting any younger, we are less convinced about Kanepi’s prospects.
