ALIZE CORNET vs CLARA TAUSON – TIP
Following a poor (10/11) season to date, Clara Tauson will take anything! On that note, we believe she’s excellent betting value to win this match!
If we go back to this time last year, Tauson was winning a tournament in Chicago! For the record, the then 18-year-old beat Emma Raducanu in the final!
In her next tournament, Tauson couldn’t get any further than the 2nd round of the US Open. However, she bounced back to win another WTA250 in Luxembourg. Also, she ended 2021 with another final in Courmayeur, albeit she was beaten by Donna Vekic.
After being talked up as Denmark’s replacement for Caroline Wozniacki, most pundits expected Tauson to pick up where she left off. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, and the 19-year-olds career-high rank of 33 slipped to 58.
To be fair, Tauson missed tournaments through injury. In fact, after retiring in Miami (23 March), she played just one match in the next three months. While the Dane reappeared for London, she was again forced to retire with a back injury. Subsequently, Tauson was beaten in the first round of Washington before making the QF of Concorde.
Having played 5 matches over the past 10 days suggests Tauson is fit again! In Concorde, she beat competent players in Katie Boulter and Astra Sharma. Moreover, in the first round here she thrashed Harmony Tan.
Despite easily beating the out-of-form Dayana Yastremska, Alize Cornet will be focusing on the up-and-coming US Open. The French player seems to be saving her best for Grand slams, and as such WTA250 is just match practice.
While we know Cornet is capable, she’s going to be up against a determined opponent in this one. In summary, if Tauson lets herself down, Cornet will accept the pass into the next round. However, if the Dane can build on her last-round win, the French player will be leaving for New York!
