ANASTASIA POTAPOVA vs CLARA BUREL – PREVIEW
Anastasia Potapova is only one ranking place below her career-high of 42. At her best, the 21-year-old has beaten many top players, including Kontaveit, Krejcikova, and Kudermetova. In fact, she beat the latter in the final of last year in Istanbul, and that was after winning another 6 matches including two qualification rounds!
However, Potapova hasn’t been at her best this season. She retired in Adelaide and was easily beaten by Parrizas Diaz at the Aussie Open. While a first-round win here against Marine Bassols Ribera was better than nothing, the 21-year-old needed 2:15 court time and three sets.
To cut a long story short, Potapova should have churned out better results. And, she’s the type of player who tends to save her best for the bigger tournaments.
We have long been of the opinion that the odds-makers are getting Clara Burel very wrong. Despite having a negative balance last season, the French player did come good in the end.
For the record, at the US Open, Burel got the better of Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina. That was after qualifying through three rounds, and subsequently, she won another match against Van Uytvanck.
Towards the back end of the last campaign, the French player made three successive quarter-finals in Uruguay, Angers, and Limoges. Amongst her victims were Ann Li and Karolina Muchova, which again proved she’s good at defying the odds!
Burel started the new season as she means it, and a first-round win over Ana Bogdan was a great start to this tournament. With the potential for better to come, we like Clara.
