You never know what you are going to get from power player Aryna Sabalenka. However, when the Belarusian is firing, she can bounce anyone off the court! Cori Gauff’s consistency is a cause for concern, and she does have a tendency to drop her head!. We should concentrate on what we know, and the first is these odds are massively biased.

While Gauff leads the head to heads 2-1, all three of those matches were tight. Furthermore, the 18-year-old was involved in a brutal three-setter yesterday, and much of her play was irrational.

For example, Gauff had four match points in the 2nd set tie-break, but she failed to close out. In the decider, she lost 3 service games, and one of those was when serving for the match at 5/3. Also, 13 double faults against 4 Aces left her -9 in the serving department!

To cut a long story short, these end-of-match wobbles are becoming part of the teenager’s DNA. We have seen her fade in plenty of tournaments, including the previous one in San Jose. While some will point to her age as a viable excuse, she’s played more matches than most 20-year-olds!

Meanwhile, Sabalenka played one of her more sane matches to beat Sara Sorribes Tormo. In fact, it is to her credit that she stayed focused to complete a 2-0 win in 1:51 court time.

There is room for improvement in Sabalenka’s game, and she will need to cut out the double faults. Nevertheless, she’s defending better than we have seen, and she’s becoming more comfortable with the long rallies.

Finally, Sabalenka is the higher-ranked player, and she’s benefitting from this fast surface!
