UTTOXETER 1:55 THE BIG STING 3/1

Eleven runners going to post in this race will put the pressure on jumping. Nevertheless, most are experienced chasers, and this is a good track for getting a view.

Connections were proven right to keep 13-year-old HIGH COUNSEL in training. Gary Hanmer’s senior citizen won 2 of his last 3 races, and that took his career record to 8 from 50. However, the old boy is 7 pounds higher today, and this is a more competitive race than the one he won.

For an 11-year-old, GOOD MAN VINNIE doesn’t have many miles on the clock. Paul Henderson’s charge won a race at this track, and he should be competitive for a place.

ALMOST GOLD failed to train on, and he’s in a stable that I tend to avoid.

WAVECREST was a favourite for his last race, but he was beaten 37L. Suffice to say, the Nigel Hawke trained 7-year-old is on a recovery mission.

TOM O’ROUGHLEY gets in with a nice racing weight, it’s just that he’s a 14-race maiden. While Sheila Lewis should be able to find a race for the son of YEATS, it’s likely to be in a small field.

A four-pound rise for GULLIVER COLLONGES isn’t a deal breaker, albeit the pressure comes from giving weight to others!

Meanwhile, despite running below par on his return to racing under rules, I have a strong fancy for THE BIG STING. The 7-year-old is prolific (won 6 from 8) in point-to-points, and many of the runners he beat in that sphere are rated higher over fences.

One thing is certain, he’s better than his recent effort suggested, and a mark of 90 is a real gift. In short, granted a bit of luck in running, the 7-year-old should win this with something to spare.
