4:00 HORTZADAR 4/1
At this track, proven course and distance form is worth plenty. The two who fit into that category are CROWNTHORPE and CROWN PRINCESS. With the first mentioned, he’s paying the price (handicap) for winning back-to-back races. Whereas, Ollie Pear’s 5-year-old is having her seasonal debut!
Charlie Johnston trained PILLAR OF HOPE is the most likely front-runner. The lightly raced 5-year-old ran a fair first race of the season, and switching to turf isn’t a problem. While the ground and falling handicap mark are positives, I reckon something will nab him!
Elle-May Croot gave DOGGED a good ride to win at Ripon. For this race, the 6-year-old is unpenalized and Croot’s claim is increased from 5 to 7 pounds.
For the record, the 6-year-old is two pounds out of the handicap but 4 pounds well in. However, while he’s favored by these weights, Beverley is a different type of track to Ripon. To cut a long story short, an inexperienced rider isn’t ideal.
My idea of the winner is HORTZADAR! At Ripon, the 8-year-old finished 2nd to the Rebecca Menzies trained gelding. Nevertheless, it was his first run of the season, and he was only just touched off.
For today’s race, Jason Watson will take over from Mark Wynn. Since the track is a test of jockeyship, that can only be a good thing!
The other reason for betting on David O’Meara’s charge is a falling handicap mark. As it stands, the 8-year-old is 18 pounds below his peak rating!
