BIANCA ANDREESCU vs CAROLINE GARCIA

WTA US OPEN

At these odds, we have to take a punt on Bianca Andreescu!

While the Canadian shouldn’t have needed three sets to get past her first opponent Harmony Tan, she’s improved! In fact, Andreescu was much more impressive in beating her in-form second-round opponent Beatriz Haddad Maia.

In that most recent match, we have to start by saying that Andreescu was more consistent than Haddad Maia. Consequently, she used the court well, and her double-backhand was sensational.

Nevertheless, what impressed us most was Andreescu’s tennis brain! In short, she kept her unforced error count to 14 and allowed her opponent to dig her own grave. While Andreescu wasn’t always decisive at the net, she confused Haddad Maia by mixing things up!

Winning Grand slams is about growing as you go, and that’s what happened when Andreescu won the 2019 US Open. Bianca ticks the course & distance box and she looks in a good place for now. The 22-year-old is older and wiser, and she will benefit mentally from winning as she did.

Caroline Garcia has been in invincible form, and she won her first two matches in straight sets. The French player is 38/16 this year, and as a consequence, her live rank improved to 15. However, the 28-year-old still has a way to go before reaching her career-high rank of 4.

In the first round, Garcia served well against Kamila Rakhimova. Moreover, her +15 (winners/ unforced errors) suggests she dominated the match, albeit she was made to work. Garcia didn’t need to be at her best to beat next-round opponent Anhelina Kalinina, and as such, we learned nothing new.

To summarise, Garcia is high in confidence and playing her best tennis. It will take a good effort from Andreescu to stop the French player, but that’s what we are expecting. While Caroline won a recent meeting (Bad Homburg), that match was on grass and the scoreline (6/7 6/4 6/4) tells its own story.
