CAROLINE DOLEHIDE vs ANNA SCHMIEDLOVA – PREVIEW
First time meeting!
Caroline Dolehide qualified by beating Laura Pigossi and Marcela Zacarias. While she was the favorite for both of those matches, it wasn’t the case against first-round opponent Jule Niemeier.
To cut a long story short, Dolehide won that match 6/1 6/0. On that note, it needs to be said, the German player was useless. In fact, she made no effort whatsoever, and the scoreline shouldn’t be taken at face value!
The 24-year-old started this week at rank 206, that’s down from a career-high of 102. With the exception of the last rounds non-trier, in 2023, Dolehide hasn’t beaten annoying of note.
For the record, during the last campaign, Dolehide’s best perforce was making the semi-finals of Colina (W115) and a W60 in Rome. During that campaign, the American beat four top 100 players. However, she was also beaten by a number of lower-graded players on her way to a 27/26.
As for Anna Schmiedlova, the Slovakian comes into this match on the back of beating (6/2 6/2) Marie Bouzkova. What we liked about the 27-year-old’s performance was she fended off 5 from 7 break points, and she made light work of her opponent’s serve.
In 2021, Schmiedlova made it to the QF of this tournament, and her record of playing in Mexico is a good one. Furthermore, she’s the higher-ranked (100) player, and we believe she’s got the perfect game for handling the more aggressive Dolehide.
