CLARA BUREL vs SARA ERRANI – TIP
WTA BUENOS AIRES
It somehow begs belief that Sara Errani continues to play at this level. The now 35-year-old is way past her sell-by date, and from a financial perspective, she doesn’t need it! For the record, the Italian won close to $14M in prize money.
If we look at her career highlights, in 2013 Errani peaked at a career-high rank of 5. In 2012, she was a beaten finalist (Maria Sharapova) at the French Open. During that same year, she reached the SF of the US Open and the QF of the Australian Open. And, between 2012 to 2014 Sara won 5 Grand Slam double finals!
During her 19-year career, Errani won 310 of her 490 clay matches. She’s 19/13 on this year’s clay, and she won a W-115 tournament in Contrexeville.
However, the Italian was knocked out in the first round of four tournaments, including the last two. Incidentally, in Colina, she was beaten by 16 year old Sara Bejlek. The other defeat was at her local tournament in Parma when she lost in straight sets to Lauren Davis
As for Clara Burel, her 16/25 YTD is well below expectations. In fact, following last year’s 44/22, the 21-year-old would have been hoping to break into the top fifty. As it stands, Burel’s career-high rank of 74 is down to a lowly 129.
Nevertheless, considering her effort at this year’s US Open, it would be wrong to write off the French player! On that occasion, Clara won five matches and one of them was against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Finally, in 2021, Clara beat Garcia, Rakhimova, and Ferro on her way to the final of Lausanne.
In summary, while Errani ticks the surface box, she’s vulnerable to a player with potential. Despite her moderate season, we are expecting Burel to lay down the foundations for a good tournament.
