CLARA BUREL vs VARVARA GRACHEVA – PICK
Some things take a bit of understanding, including the first-round win of Clara Burel over Karolina Muchova. After losing (2/6) the first set, the 21-year-old looked like she was cooked. However, her opponent went soft, and following a 2nd-set tie break, a decider was needed. To cut a long story short, Burel was able to come from a breakdown in the 3rd-set to close out 6/3.
The issue we have with Burel is her lack of consistency. Also, her YTD is a moderate 19/27, and she’s often been ditched by lower-ranked players. For the record, the French player was beaten in the first round 15 times, and in the next round on seven occasions!
During 2022, Burel has beaten the likes of Ann Li, Van Uytvanck, and Elena Rybakina. She won 5 matches at the US Open and was a quarter-finalist at two tournaments. Nevertheless, her overall profile is one filled with disappointments, and she has something to prove.
As for Varvara Gracheva, she’s another WTA player known for being erratic. In fact, the 22-year-old has a negative (27/30) YTD, and her ranking dropped from a season-high of 59 to 94.
On a more upbeat note, Gracheva won her first match against Tessah Andrianjafitrimo with ultimate ease. Furthermore, at a recent tournament in Rouen, she beat Galfi, Korpatsch, and Konjuh on her way to the semi-final.
While we wouldn’t want to put the mortgage money on either player, the percentage call is Varvara Gracheva. For some reason or the other, she plays her best tennis in France. The Russian seems to be over her mid-season lull, and she’s got the game to go far at a W125 tournament like this!
