CLARA TAUSON vs ANHELINA KALININA – PREVIEW
More was expected of Clara Tauson this year, but injuries restricted her schedule. In the meantime, her rank slipped from a career-high of 33 to today’s 132.
Since the end of October, the Danish player was able to compete in three tournaments. In the first of those, she retired when in the process of losing to Petra Marcinko. Appearing two days later in Nantes, Tauson won her first two matches before losing to Kamilla Rakhimova. Subsequently, the 19-year-old won in Selva, albeit that tournament was a low-level W25.
In the first round here, the Dane beat (6/1 6/1) Sabine Lisicki. If we are being analytical, it would be fair to suggest that Lisicki had a very bad day at the office! In fact, the German player rushed losing and it would have been better if she hadn’t bothered turning up!
As for Tauson’s 2nd-round win against Anna Blinkova, the difference on the day was converting break points. While Blinkova could only take 2 from 8, Clara won 4 of 5. To make a long story short, we wouldn’t want to overrate that form!
Meanwhile, we bet Anhelina Kalinina to win her 2nd round match against Sofia Kenin. Despite only converting 4 from 18 breakpoints, the Ukrainian was able to leave the court on the back of a 6/4 6/4 win. For the record, in the previous round, Kalinina took care of Katrina Scott (6/1 6/2).
From what we have been watching, Kalinina is playing near to her peak. Toughing it out against Kenin will give the 25-year-old confidence, and she’s suited by these courts.
In conclusion, these odds being offered on Kalinina are OTT. While Tauson is capable of ranking much higher in the future, let us concentrate on today!
