WTA BAD HOMBURG

Because of the Ukraine war, Daria Kasatkina won’t be allowed to play at Wimbledon. Interestingly, she welcomed the move from the LTA, commenting ‘’somethings are more important than tennis’’ With that in mind, there is no reason why the Russian should hold back!

With her 27/12 year to date, it is fair to suggest the number 13 ranked player is playing a good season. In fact, Kasatkina made the semi-finals of four tournaments this year. For the record, one of them was at the French Open, whereas the others were Rome, Adelaide and Melbourne. While those matches were played on different surfaces here, Dasha was a quarter-finalist at the 2018 Wimbledon!

On this surface in the past, Kasatkina beat two number one’s in Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek. Also, she was a finalist at last year’s Eastbourne, and she’s won 4 from 5 on grass this year.

Meanwhile, following a solid 48/8 in 2020, Bianca Andreescu had a poor (17/13) 2021. Consequently, her rank slipped from a career-high 4 to a now 64. As it stands, the Canadian was able to play just five tournaments this year. On that note, with the exception of Alison Riske and Danielle Collins, she’s not beaten any top players.

With regards to the current week, Andreescu didn’t need to be at her best to beat Martina Trevisan and Katie Swan. While she won both matches in straight sets, this is going to be a bigger challenge.

Lastly, it is fair to assume that Andreescu will have one eye on the up-and-coming Wimbledon.

In summary, Kasatkina has more to play for, and she’s got the game to beat Andreescu.
