We were impressed by the way Tatjana Maria handled the conditions on the way to beating first-round opponent Jasmine Paolini.
The 35-year-old working mother served particularly well, and she took the opportunity when her opponent offered a breakpoint.
Maria is like a fine wine, in that she’s become better with age. In fact, reaching the semi-final of last year’s Wimbledon must have given the German player loads of confidence.
To cut a long story short, Maria is a super tough competitor. Her game suits these courts, and she’s not going to be fazed by the rank of her opponent. With her, it’s a case of what you see is what you get!
Interestingly, Daria Kasatkina was once a finalist in this tournament. In 2018, the Russian beat several top-ranked players, including former number one Angie Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki. With this in mind, her performances at more recent tournaments in Indian Wells leave a bit to be desired!
In 2019, Kasatkina was knocked out (6/2 6/1) in the 2nd stage by Marketa Vondrousova. On her next visit, she benefitted from the retirement of Astra Sharma but it didn’t help her get past her next opponent Angie Kerber. Finally, at last year’s tournament, the German player again made light work of beating the 25-year-old.
