DONNA VEKIC vs VICTORIA AZARENKA – PICK
Victoria Azarenka beat first-round opponent Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. Actually, we should change that opening statement to Krejcikova beat herself!
In a match that seldom found any rhythm, Azarenka followed a simple game plan. All she did was get the ball back and allow her opponent to make unforced errors. While the windy conditions made it hard, the fact is Azarenka played just 7 winners!
With all due respect, we weren’t left thinking that Azarenka had returned to top form. In fact, we didn’t see anything to suggest she would follow up!
We were close to making a bet on Donna Vekic to beat Jennifer Brady. However, her most recent effort in Montreal was disappointing, and we wondered about her form! For the record, Vekic made it past the American in straight sets 7/6 7/5.
Overall, the match between Vekic and Brady was better quality. While there were nerves towards the end, some of the ball striking was excellent.
What we particularly liked about Donna was her one-two, in that she would move her opponent from side to side. In addition, she managed to keep the ball deep, and the high ball bounce was making it easier to attack.
As it stands, Vekic is just three places under her career-high rank of 19. Her endeavors on this year’s hard court are 14/4, including a tournament win in Monterrey.
The 27-year-old has season wins over Sakkari, Stephens, Rybakina, Samsonova, Garcia, and Alexandrova. Furthermore, she leads her opponent 2-1 on the head-to-head, and in 2019 she beat her at this stage in Cincinnati.
In summary, Vekic impressed more than Azarenka in the first round. She’s got the stronger season form and leads the head-to-head. Indeed, a few more wins this week could take Donna to a new career-high rank, whereas her 34-year-old opponent is on a downward spiral!
