Elise Mertens might lead (3/1) the head-to-head, but Magda Linette won their last meeting. For the record, that was at this year’s Prague when the Polish player won 6/3 2/6 6/2.

It would be fair to suggest that Mertens is having a bad season. In fact, her rank is down from a career-high 12 to 30. While the 26-year-old won 30 of her 51 matches, she’s lost against many lower-ranked opponents.

For example, at the recent Guadalajara, she was stopped by Anna Kalinskaya. In that match, Mertens was a double break up in the third set before succumbing 7/5. Furthermore, she allowed three match points to slip away against a player who has stamina issues!

While Mertens won the recent Monastir, she didn’t beat much! With the exception of Alize Cornet, the players she beat were low ranked 60 to 166. Also, she needed three sets to get past Papamichail (148) and Uchijima (109). On that note, in the 2nd-round here, the 26-year-old needed three sets against Ashlyn Krueger (199).

Meanwhile, Magda Linette arrived here with a rank of 55, and nothing changed on that score! However, if Linette wins today her rank will improve to 51, and by taking the trophy she will be promoted to rank 44.

For the most part, Linette is a solid player. She’s a natural for the top 50, and she can usually be relied upon to produce at this level. The 30-year-old made two finals this year, albeit she ended runner-up in Grodzisk and Chennai.

Also, during the current season, Linette beat a number of higher-ranked players. To name names, Cirstea, Putintseva, Riske, Jabeur, Kanepi, Zheng, Fernandez, and today’s opponent Mertens.

We are tempted to go for the outright, and that’s what we are going to suggest!
