While Elise Mertens is more proven on the hard court, she’s lower-ranked than her opponent. Also, by her standards, Mertens struggled for large parts of 2022.
For the record, the 27-year-old ended the last campaign at +7 (30/23). Nevertheless, Mertens did win a late-season tournament WTA 250 tournament in Monastir. Other than that, she reached the quarter-finals of St Petersburg, Strasbourg, and Tampico. As for the Grand slams, the best she could do was the 4th round of Australia, London, and Paris.
With the exception of Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova, the player from Belgium didn’t beat any other top players.
In the meantime, Mertens’s rank dropped from a career-high of 12 to 32. She’s won 3 of her 6 matches this year but was beaten in the other three in straight sets.
As for Martina Trevisan, the 29-year-old recently peaked at a career-high rank of 21. The Italian’s win record on the hard court is a lowly 48.3%, and she’s just 2-4 this year.
However, in Australia, Trevisan did at least beat Maria Sakkari. At that same tournament, in an earlier round, the Greek player beat Mertens.
Trevisan was a semi-finalist at the French Open. During 2022 she beat many top players, and these testing conditions won’t be a deal breaker!
