EMMA RADUCANU vs JELENA OSTAPENKO
As it stands, Jelena Ostapenko is the higher-ranked player. In fact, she started the week at rank 19, and as of today, she’s up a place at 18. A win today would be worth another place while taking the tournament improves her rank to 13.
The Latvian comes into this on the back of beating Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (6/2 6/1) in straight sets. Previously, the 25-year-old needed three sets to beat both Boyoung Jeong and Anastasia Gasanova.
For the record, Ostapenko’s 3 wins were against players ranked at 184, 181 and 698. Moreover, Jelena needed a third set tie break to beat Jeong and a 7/5 against Gasanova.
Ostapenko won Dubai and reached the final of Eastbourne. Other highlights include the semi-finals in both Doha and St Petersburg. However, since making the 4th round of London, she’s disappointed in Toronto, Cincinnati and New York.
For the most part, Jelena hasn’t done enough at this tournament, and her heavy-hitting game will be her next opponent.
Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu is starting to find her best form. While the 19-year-old struggled through the early part of the season, she’s benefitting from the guidance of Dmitry Tursunov.
Consequently, the Brit won her three matches in straight sets. The way she’s been growing into this tournament is reminiscent of when she won the US Open.
To summarise, while it’s too early to rubber stamp the comeback card, Raducanu is playing excellent tennis. Easily beating Magda Linette is good for confidence, and we know Emma’s got the game to handle a heavy hitter!
