This World Cup has played like the MLS, in that, on any given day the form book goes out of the window! Nevertheless, all our data points to this match being more balanced than the bookmaker’s odds. We are going to take England in 90 minutes, albeit with the safety net of a draw no bet!

The Three Lions have the undoubted ability, but they don’t always deliver. In fact, against the USA they labored to a lackluster 0-0 draw. However, in three other games, Gareth Southgate’s men found the back of the net on 12 occasions.

In the first match, England overpowered Iran 6-2. The only disappointment was conceding two goals against 22% possession. Wales was a pushover, and if anything the 3-0 scoreline should have been bigger. Senegal had chances and the 3-0 was a bit of an insult. All the same, the England attack was ruthless and Jordan Pickford proved himself with a great save.

The biggest challenge facing Southgate is picking his starting XI from the deepest squad in the tournament. While the coach has often surprised us with his team selection, the proof is in the pudding.

What we do know is that Harry Kane will be leading the line. The coach told the press that Chelsea striker Raheem Sterling will be involved, and we assume that means from the start! Against a team like France, the tricky Saka picks himself to go on the other wing. From what we have been watching, Jordan Henderson has done enough to join Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in midfield. Kyle Walker will be preferred to handle Mbappe, while Luke Shaw, John Stones, and Harry Maguire will form the back line.

As for France, they impressed against Australia (4-1) and Poland (3-1) but lost to Tunisia. While that match was a dead rubber and Didier Deschamps made changes, it showed a lack of depth in the squad!

Le Bleues have the talented Mbappe, while Dembele and Aurelien Tchouameni can be added to the same category. For the most part, France has been bonding well and they are getting the best out of Olivier Giroud. With that said, this is where we should do a reality check!

Giroud isn’t getting any younger, and when last seen in the English Premier he looked very ordinary. For the most part, the back four are decent but not impregnable. Furthermore, Griezmann can be excellent, but he doesn’t always deliver. In fact, we thought he was woeful against Poland, and making it to the end of that match is further proof of the lack of depth in the squad.

Consequently, we are taking the Three Lions to neutralize the French attack and find opportunities at the other end. If this match comes down to positive substitutions, England has the better options.
