5:20 FIRST EMPEROR 13/2

According to his hurdles rating, YORKSEA is fairly treated. However, this is the first run on the flat in two years, and it remains to be seen if he can take advantage.

BLAZEON FIVE won her last race for today’s jockey, and on this occasion, Christian Howarth takes off an additional two pounds. That extra allowance offsets the 5-year-olds two-pound rise, and she’s brave enough to claim a place.

Following a stint over hurdles, SASHENKA is another returning to the flat. The 7-year-old has been performing well of late, but she’s high (82) in the handicap. For the record, Dominic Ffrench Davis’  mare was never able to cover a mark of more than 75.

DIAMOND BOY was fourth in this race last year. In the meantime, Tom Ward’s 5-year-old ran 10 times and won on the all-weather race at Lingfield. On that note, he’s got a much better record on that surface and I can’t imagine him bothering the judge.

ALPINE STROLL is an interesting outsider, and he should be competitive for a place. As for MEKAKAZ, the Robert Stephens-trained 5-year-old was an easy winner on his return. Nevertheless, he’s got something to prove on turf, and an 8-pound higher mark in a better race will make life tough.

Since he’s been getting himself in a muddle, a change in jockey should do the trick for FIRST EMPEROR. Oisin Murphy is the right rider for the 4-year-old, and stepping back up in distance is another positive factor. While the selection is yet to win on turf, I believe he’s just as good on this surface. To cut a long story short, everything is in place for a big run!
