JIL TEICHMANN vs TEREZA MARTINCOVA – PICK
Jil Teichmann starts the week at rank 36, that’s down from her career-high of 21. Incidentally, that was achieved in mid-August after making the 3rd round of Toronto. On the year to date, Teichmann is 22/20. By the way, her big points came from deep runs in 5 tournaments.
In February, the 25-year-old reached the quarter-final of Dubai by beating Mertens and Svitolina. Her deepest run was a semi-final in Madrid, and there was a QF in Rome and 4th round in Paris. For the record, her best efforts (11/4) were on clay, in which she wins 65.7% of her matches.
We should point to the fact that Teichmann failed to make it past the first round in 8 tournaments. Furthermore, she’s lost to the likes of Elizabeth Mandlik, Harriet Dart, Julia Grabher, Lauren Davis and Danka Kovinic.
While Jil made the QF of this last year, her defeat to Bonaventure in Tallinn suggests she’s coming up short. Finally, her record on indoor hard courts is just 44.4% wins!
Tereza Martincova comes into this tournament at rank 78, down from a season-high of 40. Furthermore, the 27-year-old is struggling (21/4) to match last season’s (40/26) numbers.
Nevertheless, Martincova does have a lot going for her in this opening match. We should start with her 61.7% win record on indoor hard courts, thus making it her best surface. Also, the Czech player beat Svitolina, Shuai Zhang, Magda Linette, Begu and Pariizas-Diaz.
At this tournament last year, Tereza won her first two rounds against Pavlyuchenkova and Siniakova. Playing at home is an advantage, but more importantly, we see that she wants it. As for Teichmann, she’s playing like she’s going through the motions. Her recent performance levels are not good enough, and nor is her record on this surface.
