While Julia Grabher is on a career-high (85) rank, it was earned on clay courts. The 26-year-old is 44/20 on that surface, which compares to 3/5 on hard courts. For the record, she played just 41 of her 528 matches on this surface.

Grabher was recently beaten in the first round of Guadalajara by Kayla Day. In qualifying for the US Open, she was stopped at the first attempt by Viktoria Kuzmova. Also, Daria Snigur, Caroline Dolehide, and Sachia Vickery were other players to progress past the Austrian.

A quick check of Grabher’s profile reveals none of her 21 hard-court wins was against a top 100 player. While she was a quarter-finalist in Heraklion, that was a $10K tournament played in 2014. Subsequently, the furthest Julia progressed was the 2nd round of a W100 in Dubai, and the same stage of a W60 in Traralgon.

Meanwhile, Lin Zhu is another player to have recently reached a career-high rank. In the case of Zhu, a recent tournament win in Landisville took the Chinese player to rank 62.

Zhu is 37/25 this year, and of those, she won 31/15 on the hard court. Furthermore, she won 323 matches on this surface, and her strike rate is a solid 62.6%.

The 28-year-old comes into this tournament on the back of beating Alize Cornet in Guadalajara. While she lost in the next round to Daria Kasatkina, she did at least win 3 tournaments this year.

It would be wrong of us to suggest that Zhu is super consistent, she’s not! Nevertheless, she’s the higher-ranked player and the more natural for this surface. Finally, she’s had the metal to win three tournaments, and 29 of her 37 wins came in two sets!
