First time meeting between world number 5 Caroline Garcia and 123 ranked Karolina Muchova. While the rankings suggest this is going to be one-sided, we disagree!
Garcia had a spectacular 2022, and on 16.01.2023 the 29-year-old reached a new career-high rank of 4. In November, the French player won the WTA finals, which was followed by winning Bad Homburg, Warsaw, and Cincinnati.
Also, Caro finished the last campaign with 47 wins compared to 21 losses. Her total prize money went from $8 million to $15 million, and she beat all the top players!
However, while Garcia resurrected her career, it doesn’t mean she will continue at the same rate. On that note, her current 10-3 YTD might look good on paper, but she hasn’t beaten any of the big names. In fact, those three defeats were against Belinda Bencic, Alycia Parks, and Magda Linette, and she was favourite for all of those matches!
To cut a long story short, we should congratulate Garcia on her recent. Nevertheless, what happened in the past doesn’t guarantee the future, and we believe she’s got something to prove!
As for Muchova, her rank can be explained by injuries. As a matter of fact, since 2020 the 26-year-old played just 79 matches.
Despite her physical problems, the 26-year-old was able to reach a career-high rank of 19 in May 2021. While only time will tell if she is fully recovered from her injuries, we like what we are seeing from the Czech player.
In the first round here, Karolina brushed aside (6/2 6/2) the challenge of Martina Trevisan. At the Australian Open, she took Danielle Collins to a 3rd-set tiebreak.
Over the course of her career, Muchova claimed all the big scalps. Her tennis brain and exceptional variety will always give her a chance, and that’s what we expect to see today!
