Karolina Muchova leads the world number one (2-1) on the head-to-head. And, while Iga Swiatek got her revenge for two earlier defeats in the final of this year’s French Open, the match went the distance!
For the record, in Paris, Swiatek won 6/2 5/7 6/4, whereas the two wins for Muchova were back in 2019 and 2020.
The 22-year-old Polish player is 50/8 this year, and she arrived here on the back of winning a WTA250 in Warsaw. Suffice to say, Iga didn’t need to be at her best to win such a tournament, and the challenge here is greater.
Swiatek won her first-round match against Karolina Pliskova (7/6 6/2). However, we thought she made hard work of what should have been an easy job.
On that note, Swiatek’s last visit to Canada ended at this stage, and it was the same on her only other visit. While this is a good prize to land, we feel that Iga is out to peak at the US Open!
As for Muchova, we were impressed with the way she handled both Potapova and Cirstea. The 26-year-old is handling the testing conditions best, and she seems to be hitting her peak at the right time!
We don’t have the balls to go for the outright, but we will be taking Muchova, and the handicap start!
