WTA NOTTINGHAM

Earlier on in the year, Katie Volynets won a W100 clay tournament in Palm. Since then, the 20-year-old made the semi-final of W100 Bonita, She peaked at a career-high rank of 112, and starting this week ranked 123.

Volynets is winning a higher percentage (21/12) of matches this year. In comparison, she ended 2019 with 21/18. In 2020 she was just 17/17 and then followed last year’s 29/25. For the most part, the American applies her trace at lower-grade tournaments, and she doesn’t have much experience on grass,

For the record, Katie is 5/5 on this surface. Her biggest win was in qualifying for last year’s Wimbledon, she beat 48 ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia. However, at last week’s (W100) tournament in Surbiton, Volynets was beaten (6/4 6/4) in the first round by 274 ranked Lulu Sun.

In 2015, Heather Watson peaked at a career-high of 38. At the time of writing, the 30-year-old is ranked at 103. The Brit is 13/14 on the year to date, albeit those results are from main tour matches.

With regards to the current campaign, Watson beat several higher-ranked players including Svitolina, Kovinic, Rus, and Kucova. She made the third round of Miami, and in 2020 won Acapulco.

While Watson’s win rate on grass is just 52.8%, she’s beaten many top players. In fact, Dominika Cibulkova, Barbora Strycova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Donna Vekic, and Shuai Zhang can be listed.

Furthermore, she took several former numbers 1’s the distance, namely Iga Swiatek, Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams, and Victoria Azarenka. Finally, she made the semi-final last years in Birmingham, and she’s twice been a semi-finalist in Eastbourne.

To summarise, Heather Watson is proven on grass, and she applies her trade at higher level tournaments than her opponent. In short, Volynets will need to raise her game, and that recent result in Surbiton is concerning!
