GERMAN BUNDESLIGA

Koeln started the season with a 3-1 win against Schalke and followed with two draws in Leipzig and Frankfurt. Whichever way we look at it, they are good results. Furthermore, on Thursday night, Koeln progressed to the group stages of the Europa Conference league.

In that match with MOL Fehervar, the Billy Goats were left chasing a first-round (1-2) deficit. Nevertheless, they were still red hot the short odds favourite for that match that they won 0-3.

For the record, while the first game defeat was disappointing, circumstances played a role. In fact, Julian Chabot received a red card after just 20 minutes! His coach punished him for that mistake by making him sit on the bench for last week’s draw in Frankfurt.

Steffen Baumgart made four changes for the midweek match, with Linton Maina and Florian Dietz taking the attacking roles. With the close proximity of that game, Steffen Tigges and Sargis Adamyan could be preferred today. Skipper Jonas Hector is almost certain to be recalled into the starting XI, albeit Dimitris Limnios and Mark Uth are sidelined.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart has 2 points from their first three games, with the draws coming against Leipzig and Werder Bremen. In the last round, Matarazzo must have been left wondering how his players lost  (0-1) a home game to Freiburg. For the most part, Stuttgart dominated that match but they couldn’t find the net from 18 attempts.

If we go back to last season, The Reds saved themselves from a play-out on the final day of the season. With that in mind, we would have expected the Club to invest in new players. However, that hasn’t been the case, and VfB actually profited from player transactions.

In summary, we can see Stuttgart are coming up short in the goal department. Also, they have a bunch of players missing, and they are not the best travellers. FC Koeln won this fixture last season, and the midweek trip to Hungary didn’t take much out of the players.
