To begin with, Lauren Davis comes into this tournament on the back of a solid 12/5. In the season opener, the 29-year-old campaign started with a 6/2 6/1 over Tamara Zidansek. In the 2nd-round of Auckland, she lost in three sets to Danka Kovinic.
Nevertheless, that tournament had done its job, in that she was fully prepared for her next challenge in Hobart. To cut a long story short, Davis won 7 matches on her way to winning the trophy. For the record, it was the American’s first tournament win since May 2019.

The issue we have with Davis is she doesn’t have much depth to her game. If we are being nice, we credit Lauren for being defensively resilient. On the flip side, she doesn’t have any heavy ammunition and that means she relies on her opponents to mess up!
Meanwhile, Kalinskaya had a slow (4-6) start to the season, and she arrives here on the back of three consecutive defeats. On a more upbeat note, the 24-year-old won three matches in Adelaide. As a matter of fact, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Alison Riske, and Jelena Ostapenko were her victims.
In October, at a big tournament in Guadalajara. Kalinskaya beat all of Elise Mertens, Barbora Krejcikova and Daria Kasatkina. Also, it is worth noting that on her last visit here she won 4 matches.
While Anna can be a slow starter, she’s got a wonderful forehand. If her power game is switched on, she should be able to batter the defense of the Americans.
