LIUDMILLA SAMSONOVA vs KAI KANEPI – PICK
Since the beginning of August, Liudmilla Samsonova has won three tournaments. The first of those was Washington, in which she beat today’s opponent Kaia Kanepi in the final.
Subsequently, the 23-year-old won Cleveland and followed up with Tokyo. For the record, the tournament in Japan was a higher grade (WTA 500) than the other two! As a result of the Russians’ 28/16, she moved to a career-high rank of 22.
Incidentally, Liudmilla’s last thirteen wins were all completed in straight sets. The last person to take her the distance was Kanepi, and in that match, she needed to come from a set behind.
Most recently, Samsonova lost in the first round of San Diego to Andreescu. After squaring the match at 1-1, it was the Canadian who got the breaks to win the final set 6/2. While it was a bit disappointing to lose that match, at least it gave the Russian player more time to acclimatise and prepare for the challenge ahead.
Meanwhile, Kanepi is 29/17 this year, and of those, she’s 15/9 on hard courts. The highlight of the 37-year-old season was making the QF of the Australian Open. That final in Washington was the furthest she made it in any tournament, and the next best was a semi-final in Tallinn. However, from a financial stance, Melbourne was the big payday!
The Estonian starts the week at rank 29, but she did disappoint in her last tournament in San Diego. In fact, Kanepi was beaten in the first round of qualification by Lauren Davis.
If Kanepi does have a weakness it’s that she can’t play too much tennis. While her body has been holding up well this year, the long season could be catching up with the senior player.
In conclusion, when Samsonova wins it’s usually in straight sets. It is rare for an opponent to come from behind, so winning the first set should be the challenge.
