MADISON KEYS vs LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA – PREVIEW
At the beginning of the year, we expected Liudmila Samsonova to progress quickly into being a top-ten player. For the most part, inconsistencies in the 24-year-old’s game and the pursuing lack of confidence held her back.
Samsonova did at least make the final of a recent tournament in Cincinnati, and we shouldn’t read much into losing 6/0 6/1 against Jess Pegula. After all, the American had an easy route into the final, whereas Liudmila only had two hours to recover from playing the semi-final.
As far as the current tournament goes, Samsonova beat both her opponents in straight sets. However, that would have been expected, and the 7/6 6/3 over Claire Liu was too close for comfort.
To cut a long story short, Samsonova will need to find more to have a chance against Madison Keys.
In winning her two matches easily, it is fair to suggest that the American bought her A-Game to New York!
While we expected Keys to see off Arantxa Rus, the 6/2 6/1 over Yanina Wickmayer is even more compelling. Winning 77% on 76% first serves set Madison up nicely, and the fact is she only needed to save one break point! Finishing with a solid +8 (20 winners v 12 unforced errors) and converting all 4 break points bodes well!
