MARIA SAKKARI vs KAROLINA MUCHOVA - PREVIEW

MARIA SAKKARI vs KAROLINA MUCHOVA – PREVIEW

Both players made a meal out of winning their last-round matches. Nevertheless, they are through and it’s an interesting pairing.

In Cincinnati, Karolina Muchova needed three sets to get past both Beatriz Haddad Maia. Whereas, Maria Sakkari won her only match against Sorana Cirstea.

On past evidence (3-1 heat-to-head), Muchova has the advantage. Since 2021, the Czech player won all three meetings against Sakkari. For the record, two of those were at the French Open and the other was in Madrid. Suffice it to say, those matches were played on clay courts. Incidentally, the Greek player’s only win was 7 years ago!

We would best describe Sakkari as often the bridesmaid but rarely the bride. In fact, the 28-year-old reached eight tour finals, and she was only able to win once. Since 2021, she lost all 6 finals, and her only tournament win was at a WTA 250 in Morocco!

Sakkari is 28/16 this year, and of those, she’s 16/8 on hard court. Since the Greek is a top-ten player, she was given a bye in round one. In the 2nd-round, Maria came from a set down to beat Cirstea. However, there wasn’t any fluidity in the match, and she seemed to be struggling with herself!

Meanwhile, Muchova took time to get going against her first-round opponent Haddad Maia, but she was well on top by the end. As for needing three sets to get the better of Petra Martic, her opponent made her work for the win!

Following her two wins this week, Muchova reached a new career-high rank of 15. The in-form Czech player is having a great year (30-12) to date, and she even made it to the final of Paris.

With aspirations of reaching this year’s finals and becoming a permanent top-ten player, Muchova will need to win matches like this. We are taking the 27-year-old to make it 4 straight wins against this opponent!
