MARKET RASEN – HIGH VALUE BETTING PICK
1:15 ESCOBEDO 7/1
Following back-to-back wins, BARRIER PEAKS is the obvious one! The lightly raced 7-year-old was an easy winner of a heavy ground hurdle at Exeter. For the record, the 2nd in that race was THE IMPOSTER, who incidentally won the next time out.
Subsequently, a 10-pound penalty didn’t stop David Pipe’s charge from following up at Uttoxeter. The son of BLUE BRESIL won those races on good and heavy ground, thus proving he handles all conditions The first of those wins was on a right-handed track, so he ticks that box!
The challenge for Fergus Gillard’s mount is another ten pounds and he’s lumbered with top weight.
I can’t get too excited by the inconsistent CALIDAD. While Charlie Longsdon’s gelding did better last time out, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s flattered to deceive. Nevertheless, he’s 17 pounds below his highest handicap mark, and he will be ridden by a promising 6-pound claimer. In short, if he’s on a going day he would be a big danger.
As for LONE STAR, he could do no more than win his last race easily. However, this is more competitive and he’s unlikely to follow up!
As for my idea of the winner, it’s got to be ESCOBEDO. For the most part, the Milton Harris-trained 5-year-old is consistent!
Furthermore, if we take his flat mark of 63, the rule of thumb (+45) equivalent over hurdles is 108. In this instance, 85 could be perceived as a gimme.
Finally, the selection represents a stable in the winners, and his claiming jockey takes off a useful 6 pounds.
