Despite her 27/12 YTD, Ons Jabeur isn’t having the best of seasons. In fact, she’s well behind her level of 47/17 (2022) and 48/19 (2021) in the past two years!
As it stands, the Tunisian dropped from a career-high rank of 2 to number starting this tournament at number 7. Also, she’s just 8th in the list for this year’s tour finals, albeit 480 points ahead of next-best Madison Keys.
For the record, Jabeur is the top seed at this tournament. That status entitled the 29-year-old to skip the first round, and with it earn a few (55) extra points. Since Madison Keys, Daria Kasatkina, and Petra Kvitova are not entered, those players won’t be making up any leeway. Meanwhile, 11th-placed Belinda Bencic was beaten in the first round, and Jelena Ostapenko needs to make up 806 (+55) points.
Incidentally, the winner of this tournament will be rewarded with 470 points. With only two big tournaments (Guadalajara and Zhengzhou) remaining, it’s hard to imagine Jabeur missing out!
To cut a long story short, Jabeur isn’t in the best physical shape. Her challenge is making sure she’s ready for the finals, thus we are not expecting her to be fully wound up for the challenge ahead. PS – If Ostapenko falls against Alexandrova, the situation will become easier again!
Meanwhile, Anastasia Potapova fought hard to win her first-round match against Alycia Parks. While the 22-year-old needed three sets to come through that challenge, she’s the type of player who needs matches!
Potapova has struggled since turning her ankle in Washington, but the last-round win should have done her good. In any case, the 27-ranked player is really game, and she’s got a good record against top players!
