Katie Boulter is 8-2 this year, and she even won a W60 tournament in Canberra. However, while she beat three players with higher rankings, none of them are in the top 100.
The Brit failed to qualify for the Australian Open, and since then she was beaten in the first round of Hua Hin. The two players who beat the 26-year-old were Polina Kudermetova (167) and Su Jeong Jang (141).
For the record, in qualifying for Austin, Boulter made it past Hailey Baptiste (258) in straight sets. In the 2nd round, she was a break up against Elina Avanesyan when the Russian retired.
At the right level, Boulter is more than capable of holding her own. Nevertheless, she has had a history of injuries, and it’s clearly affected her confidence. To cut a long story short, we are far from convinced about her chance.
Meanwhile, Peyton Stearns is an up-and-coming young player. In fact, the 21-year-old is 16/2 this year, and she enters this tournament with a career-high rank of 137. Stearns is the winner of 5 ITF tournaments, and three of those took place this year!
Stearns played College Tennis for the University of Texas in Austin. And, she was the first Texas to win the NCAA Division I Women’s Singles National Championship.
What impresses us with the Texan is the way she wins her matches. Her attitude on court is take no prisoners, and that’s the right way to approach today’s match.
