SANDOWN 1:15 PITNEY 7/2

Because of the softening ground in Sandown, both AL SHABAB and GET THE MUSIC ON have become non-runners.

SPANISH BLAZE is 2/2 over this course & distance, and one of those wins was last time out. The ground that day was described as good/soft, while his other two wins came on good.

Will he handle the more testing ground today, and from a 4-pound higher handicap mark? To cut a long story short, I believe extra weight and conditions will have an adverse effect!

SWINDON represents an in-form stable, and he can almost certainly do better than he did in his last race. Nevertheless, I believe he’s a strong stayer and a mile plus would suit him better.

STORM STAR won his debut race on the all-weather, but he failed to follow up under a penalty and extra furlong in Kempton. Switching to turf is an unknown factor, and a handicap mark of 83 is high enough.

VALIDATED failed to settle at Goodwood, but he still stayed on strongly towards the end. Since he wasn’t given the best ride, it’s no surprise to see Rhys Clutterbuck taking over. Previously, Joseph Parr’s gelding stayed on strongly to win at a stiff track (Brighton), thus suggesting he’s got more to give. Since he’s down in grade, the 7/1 on offer is fair and my only reason for looking further is the ground.

The one I want to side with is PITNEY. The son of MEHMAS won at the third attempt, and since then he’s been an unfortunate 2nd at Chester. In that race, his jockey got him into a real mess, and after switching to the outside he was given too much to do. If that race were rerun with today’s jockey Billy Loughnane, the result would have been different!
