CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

In the recent old firm derby, Rangers were on the end of a 4-0 hammering by Celtic. One of the players heavily criticised for his performance was Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin. From a keeper’s perspective, the goals conceded went from bad to worse.

McLaughlin couldn’t get enough of a hand on the first goal. While he wasn’t entirely to blame many goalkeepers would have done better! The 2nd was more down to sloppy defending, albeit the goalie failed to cover his angles. Number three went through the stoppers legs, and then came the embarrassing goal. McLaughlin rolled the ball out to an opposing player who scored!

For the most part, the Rangers goalkeeper was useless. However, that comment also applied to his defenders, and if that wasn’t enough Giovanni Van Bronckhurst’s men failed to create.

Subsequently, in this competition, the Gers were beaten 4-0 by Ajax. In that game, Rangers defended horribly and they could have been punished by an even bigger scoreline.

Now comes the big news, McLaughlin is injured and won’t be able to take part. That means 40-year-old veteran Allan McGregor is the most likely stand-in. Also, Van Brockhurst is competing without Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence, John Souttar, Kemar Roofe, Ianis Hagi and Filip Helander. One player who could get a start is Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos, although he’s yet to impress.

Meanwhile, Napoli won (1-0) their weekend match against Spezia. The Partenopei are top of Serie A on goal difference, and they started their Champions League campaign with a win.

In the opening round, Luciano Spalletti’s men thrashed last year’s finalist Liverpool 4-1. While the opposing coach said it was the Red’s worse performance under his guidance, Napoli did a good job!

The visitors are without Victor Osimhen, Hirving Lozano and the unused Diego Demme. Nevertheless, Spalletti has a 27-man squad and enough alternatives. Either Giacomo Raspadori or Giovanni Simeone will lead the line, while Kim Min-jae and Piotr Zielinski could be rotated into the starting XI.

Rangers are not good enough for this level – Despite home advantage, we expect the Gers to be outclassed
