REAL SALT LAKE vs AUSTIN FC – PICK

MLS – USA

By the end of last season’s main campaign, Austin FC was 2nd in the Western Conference. In comparison, Real Salt Lake scraped (7th) into the playoffs by winning in the last round.

During the last season, these two clubs met three times. One of those matches was in the playoffs, and at the end of normal time, it was 2-2. Austin FC went on to win that home fixture in a penalty shoot-out!

The Verde and Black were fortunate to get a 94th-minute equalizer (penalty) that day. Also, the then hosts benefitted from playing against ten men from 52 minutes and onwards! For the record, the two main season fixtures ended with the home sides winning.

Austin started the new season with a home defeat to new MLS member St Louis City. While Josh Wolff’s men took a 2-1 lead in that match, the visitors equalized in 78 minutes and found the winner at 86 minutes. According to match stats and especially shots on goal (2-9), the result reflected the game.

Subsequently, in the league, the hosts beat CF Montreal with an 88th-minute winner. However, since then lost a cup game (3-0) to Violette, and to give some perspective Austin were odds of 1.07 for that match!!

It augers well when Real Salt Lake win away matches, and that’s what they managed in the season opener. On that occasion, Pablo Mastroeni’s team came from a goal behind to win 1-2 against the Vancouver Whitecaps. While the next match against the Seattle Sounders ended in a 2-0 defeat, that would have been expected.

For today’s game, RSL is without injured pair Zack Farnsworth and forward Axel Kei. While both Pablo Ruiz and Scott Caldwell are in doubt, Jasper Loffelsend returns from a one-match ban.

RSL is much better when playing in Utah, and they will be fully wound up for this first home game of the new season!
