Sloane Stephens will always be inconsistent! On paper, she did well to beat Elise Mertens in San Diego, but followed up with a defeat against the out-of-form Caroline Garcia!
Being outbattled in the first round of the US Open by a struggling Beatriz Haddad Maia was disappointing, and so was the 6/1 6/3 loss to Sara Sorribes Tormo (Cleveland)
If were want to add weight to our argument that Stephens is inconsistent, she beat Garcia in Cincinnati. For the record, the 30-year-old’s 25/19 YTD becomes 11/13 on hard court!
Despite Stephens being a difficult player to judge, we should at least recognize she won a 250 tournament on these courts in 2022. Furthermore, she was a quarter-finalist at last year’s tournament but was beaten at that stage by Jessica Pegula (6/2 6/2).
As for Ann Li, following a poor (16/20) 2022, she seems to be getting her act back together. In fact, the former number 44-ranked player recently beat Lauren Davis, Alize Cornet, and Magda Linette in Cincinnati.
To be honest, Li didn’t need to do much in qualifying because one of her intended opponents withdrew. For the record, the 23-year-old’s other match ended in a 6/1 6/1 win over Jessica Failla.
While there is always an ‘’if’’ factor with WTA, we believe a repeat of her effort in Cincinnati would be enough for Li to win!
