If this match is played on merit, there can only be one winner! Sorana Cirstea had an impressive fortnight, and the only thing which can stop the Romanian is herself.
For the record, the last time the 32-year-old last made it to this stage of a WTA1000 tournament was in 2013. That was played in Toronto, and in the quarter-final, she beat today’s opponent Petra Kvitova!
On that note, these players have met ten times in the past. While Kvitova leads the head-to-head 6/4, since 2021 Cirstea won two of the three meetings. Incidentally, the other matches took place between 2008 to 2016!
While Sorana was a bit fortunate to catch last-round opponent Aryna Sabalenka on a bad day, we were impressed! After all, when the pressure was applied, Cirstea was quick to regroup. Also, she was finding plenty of depth, and her nerve held out at the end!
We could also point to all her wins this week being in straight sets. And, her victims included Caroline Garcia, Karolina Muchova, and Marketa Vondrousova.
Meanwhile, Kvitova needed three sets to get past yesterday’s opponent Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Czech player should be applauded for coming through a tough battle, but the result could have been different. In fact, we believe Kvitova benefitted from serving first, meaning her opponent was playing catch-up.
In all honesty, Kvitova made it to the semi-final without impressing us. She needed tie breaks to get past Gracheva and Vekic, and she benefitted from her superior mental strength.
With a day extra to recover, these odds about Cirstea stand out – big bet!
