ST GALLEN vs FC ZURICH: FINAL DAY PREVIEW & PICK

ST GALLEN vs FC ZURICH: FINAL DAY PREVIEW & PICK

SWISS SUPERLEAGUE

This is the final round of the Swiss Super League which will incidentally begin next season on July 24.

Most of this season’s League positions are settled, except for the crucial race between 4th and 5th place. Both positions secure a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifiers, but finishing 4th means playing one less qualification round.

Currently, the 2021/22 Champions FC Zurich hold the 4th spot, just above St Gallen in the Championship Group. Both teams are tied on points, with FC Zurich leading by only a single goal.

During the main season, St Gallen won two of their three encounters with FC Zurich (1-0, 0-1), with the other match ending in a 1-1 draw. However, their last ten meetings are more balanced, with four wins each and two draws.

However, St Gallen has been formidable at home, securing 37 of their 57 points at Kybupark with an 11-4-3 record. They enter this match after a 1-3 victory in Winterthur and have lost just one of their last ten league games since March 16th, that loss coming against the Champions Young Boys.

In their last home match against FC Zurich, St Gallen successfully restricted Zurich to long-range shots and created more scoring opportunities. Despite possession being split equally (50/50%) their 1-0 victory was well-deserved.

FC Zurich, on the other hand, began the season with a weakened squad due to player sales. After a poor start, they replaced coach Bo Henriksen with Murat Ural in mid-February, who also failed to meet expectations, leading to Ricardo Muniz taking over as caretaker coach.

Under Muniz, FC Zurich has a 4-0-3 record, including recent wins against Winterthur, Servette, and Lugano. However, their narrow win against Lugano, despite Lugano’s 30-goal attempts, suggests that Zurich’s performance may not have been as the scoreline indicates.

St Gallen’s odds are more than fair. After all, they are strong at home and will be motivated by a full stadium!
