ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

Seventeenth-placed Stoke welcomes top-of-the-league Burnley to the Bet365 stadium. The reverse game ended in a 1-1 draw after Stoke scored a late (87th minute) equalizer. To cut a long story short, the Clarets failed to convert 69% of possession and chances into goals!

As it stands, the Potters took 30 points from 24 games, and just 12 of those were taken from 11 home games. In comparison, Burnley managed 50 points from 24 games. The Clarets took 31 points at home, and they average 1.73 points per game on the road.

Stoke comes into this match on the back of three games (1-2-0) undefeated. However, in the last round, the Potters needed a late own goal to earn a draw from 20th-placed Rotherham.

For today’s game, Stoke boss Alex Neill is likely to stick with the same XI which drew in Rotherham. The only change we can imagine is Harry Clarke coming in to bolster the host’s defense!

Meanwhile, Burnley won their last four League games against Birmingham, Middlesbrough, QPR, and Blackburn. While Vincent Kompany’s men have recently been knocked out of the EFL cup by Manchester United, that could be a blessing in disguise.

If the visitors win today’s game, they will pull three points clear of the nearest pursuer Sheffield United. Moreover, Kompany’s men will have a 14-point gap to the third-placed team and they will be a step closer to automatic promotion!

For the record, with 49 League goals, Burnley is the League’s top scorer. The visitors have an xG of 26.92 from Open play, and an average possession rate of 64.22%. The only two sides to have beaten Burnley were Sheffield United and Watford, and they did that by being more physical.

In summary, this league is never going to be easy. Nevertheless, two teams have broken clear of the chasing pack, and Burnley looks like they are heading back to the Premiership. The visitors will soon take control of this game and the only challenge remaining will be scoring. Since they have been prolific in that department, we won’t be looking any further than an away win!
