JELENA OSTAPENKO vs EMMA RADUCANU
The surface in Stuttgart takes some understanding. To win here, players need to be both aggressive and take control. A good serve and an ability to convert the point are a must.
Jelena Ostapenko is an all-or-nothing type of player. When her timing is on, she’s capable of beating most opponents. However, 2nd guessing the Latvian isn’t easy, and she’s at her most vulnerable in the early rounds of tournaments.
On three past visits here, Ostapenko hasn’t been able to get beyond the first round. Also, while making the QF of the Australian Open suggests she’s still capable, her rank started to tumble.
Since winning the US Open, things haven’t been plain sailing for Emma Raducanu. Nevertheless, the Brit had valid excuses, and she seems to be getting her act back together.
While the 20-year-old hasn’t been able to play much tennis this year, she looked good in Indian Wells. In fact, beating Kovinic and Linette in straight sets was eclipsed by her win over 12th-ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia.
For the most part, Emma struggled through 2022. With that said, she did have good tournaments in Madrid and at this tournament in Stuttgart.
We believe that the Brit as the constitution to do particularly well on this surface. She’s been making it look easy in training, and if anything Stuttgart is her type of tournament!
