TATJANA MARIA vs LIN ZHU – PICK
For the record, working mother Tatjana Maria won 44 matches this season! In the live-ranking chart, the 35-year-old worked her way to rank 76. The German player’s career-high rank was 46 which was achieved in 2018.
The highlight of Maria’s year was making it to the semi-final of Wimbledon. Incidentally, that was worth a whopping £535,000.
During the first part of the season, Maria won Rome (W60) and Bogota (WTA 250). With her low rank at the time, she was forced to qualify for those tournaments first!
On that note, 9 of her season wins came in qualifying and she was defeated 25 times. For the most part, Maria is a confirmed journeyman rather than a big-time player. While she deserves credit for a great Wimbledon, making that stage of a top tournament was an exception rather than the rule!
Lin Zhu will start today’s match on a new career-high rank. As it stands, the 28-year-old is up at 63 in the live-ranking chart. Previously, Zhu had never ranked higher than 69, and she started the week at 70.
The Chinese player is 36/22 this year, and 15 of those wins came in landing three tournaments. Interestingly, those were all played on hard court, with the most recent being a W100 in Landisville.
While Zhu hasn’t taken any big scalps this year, she’s proven herself at this level. In fact, she’s the higher-ranked player in this match, and her 30/12 on a hard court is solid.
Zhu won her two matches this week in straight sets. In the first of them, she beat the in-form Su Jeong Jang and followed up with a 6/1 6/3 over Ankita Raina.
To summarise, Maria has more diversity in her game, and she’s good fun to watch. Nevertheless, we have Zhu as the more natural favourite! As a tactic, Lin is going to keep the ball in play and make her opponent work. If she stays loyal to her game, the Chinese player should come out on top!
