Incidentally, in winning Barranquilla, she beat all of Tanroda, Grammatikopoulou, Saville, Lepchencko, and Ferro in straight sets. Furthermore, she didn’t give more than 3 games up in any of those ten sets, and that happened only once!
Nevertheless, Varvara Gracheva won her only meeting with Maria, and that was earlier in the year in Merida. In the final of that tournament, Gracheva came from a set down to beat her opponent 3/6 6/4 6/2.
Since then a lot happened for the 23-year-old, with the most important one being a change in nationality. For the record, Gracheva is now French which makes life easier for the former Rennin!
As for the year to date, Gracheva won 33 of her 57 matches. Of those she’s 23/12 on hard court, in which she’s beaten top players Ons Jabeur, Petra Martic, Daria Kasatkina, and Sloane Stephens.
Incidentally, Gracheva reached the final of a WTA 250 tournament in Austin. Better still, she qualified first before reaching both the 4th round of Indian Wells and Miami.
In summary, we respect Maria but we believe Gracheva should have her measure.
