VALUE KEMPTON BETTING PICK
3:00 CLONDAW CASTLE 10/1
Last year’s winner CAP DU NORD arrives here on the back of winning a valuable race at Ascot. For the record, Christian Williams’ gelding was raised 5 pounds for that effort, and he’s a further 3 pounds out of the handicap. While his trainer booked 5-pound claimer Cian Quirke, I’m keen to take on the 10-year-old.
We bet OUR POWER when he won his return race. The Sam Thomas trained 8-year-old was given a 5-pound rise for winning, and he could improve further. If I was doing a place pot, the son of POWER would be included.
As for SAINT CALVADOS, the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding ticks several of the right boxes. First and foremost, Harry Cobden is taking over the ride from David Maxwell. The last time Cobden rode the son of SAINT DES SAINTS, he ran away with a grade two at Sandown.
Secondly, the conditions will suit this fella, and so will the return to three miles. Lastly, the 10-year-old is well handicapped, and he comes from a stable in great form. On the negative side, he needs to bounce back from two poor runs in which in one he was beaten at odds of 2/7.
A case can be made for many of the others, but the one I want to be on is CLONDAW CASTLE. Tom George has had this race in mind for a while, and he won on this card two years ago. Incidentally, that was from a handicap mark of 154, which fell back from a career-high of 160.
Jonathon Burke’s mount prepared with a good 2nd over a distance short of his best. Also, he’s never been out of the frame at Kempton, and he’s going to get the race run to suit!
