VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA vs ANHELINA KALININA – PICK

WTA DUBAI

For the record, the only time these players met was at last year’s Linz. At that indoor tournament, Veronika Kudermetova beat Anhelina Kalinina 4/6 6/4 6/2.

At the beginning of the current year, Kudermetova reached a career-high rank of 9. Whereas, the 25-year-old will start the Dubai week at rank 11. The Russian comes into this match on the back of a 10/5 YTD!

Kudermetova recently made it to the semi-final of Doha by beating all of Barbora Krejcikova, Cori Gauff, and Sofia Kenin. However, in her next match, she was easily (6/1 6/1) stopped by Iga Swiatek. Whether that was a tactical decision is anyone’s guess, albeit she wasn’t seen making much effort!

In 2022, Kudermetova made it to the final of this tournament before losing to Jelena Ostapenko. Also, to prove she likes this part of the word, she was also a finalist at the 2021 Abu Dhabi.

While Kalinina can’t boast such a strong profile as her opponent, it would be wrong to underestimate the 26-year-old. After all, she’s got an excellent strike rate, and over the past year, she’s beaten many top players.

During the current season, the Ukrainian player easily took care of Petra Kvitova. And, in 2022, she beat Maria Sakkari (Eastbourne), Madison Keys (Rome & Miami), Garbine Muguruza (Madrid), Elena Rybakina (Charleston), and Beatriz Haddad Maia (Miami).

As for other highlights, Kalinina won an end-of-season tournament in Limoges. Furthermore, she made two semi-finals and four quarter-finals.

For the most part, Kalinina has proven herself at the top level. She’s quietly progressive, and only missing tournaments (injury) cost her a higher rank. We expect the year-older player to at least get within the handicap spread!
