These players met twice, and it’s one apiece.
Despite winning just 18/32 matches this year, Victoria Azarenka is still ranked 18. Since returning to the tour in 2018, the 34-year-old played Cincinnati on 4 occasions.
For the record, she reached the 3rd round on one occasion, and the second round on the other 3 attempts.
The former number one started the season with a semi-final in the US Open, and since then she’s reached the 4th round of London. However, her performances at other tournaments leave a bit to be desired, and she only seems motivated by playing the slams!
As for Barbora Krejcikova, in 2022 she reached a career-high rank of 2. While that number has since dropped to 11, she comes into this tournament on a solid 25/13.
For the most part, Krejcikova’s campaign can best be described as mixed! Nevertheless, she showed a high level to win a tournament in Dubai and in doing so claimed the scalps of four top 10 players. In fact, she beat Daria Kasatkina, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek!
Subsequently, the 27-year-old reached the 4th rounds of Indian Wells and Miami. More recently, there was a final in Birmingham before a second-round retirement in London!
This will be Barbora’s first match since Wimbledon, but preparation isn’t going to be an issue. The Czech is one of the fittest players on tour, and in 2021 she was a quarter-finalist in Cincinnati.
In short, we trust Krejcikova more than the Belorussian! Her flat hitting and court sense should be more than enough to secure a passage into the next round.
