WTA AUSTRALIAN OPEN PICK
NURIA PARRIZAS-DIAZ vs DONNA VEKIC
It needs to be said, some things in WTA make no sense! Nevertheless, it is these inconsistencies that help create betting value and the reason why we prefer WTA over ATP.
Take it from us, balancing WTA odds is more of a challenge. In fact, the betting markets are prone to exaggerating a favorite’s chance. Using the data we collected, there is often more value in betting on the underdog. Incidentally, Donna Vekic is a perfect example of what we mean.
In the first round, the 26-year-old made heavy weather out of beating Oksana Selekhmeteva. That match needed a third-set tiebreak, and her 176-ranked opponent had enough chances to win. To summarise, Vekic got over the winning line but she needed 2:57 and failed to impress.
Subsequently, the Croatian was the betting outside against Liudmila Samsonova. However, it didn’t stop her from beating the highly-rated Russian, albeit her opponent made it easy! To cut a long story short, Samsonova won just 27% of second serves and failed to find any momentum.
As for Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, she might have limitations but it hasn’t stopped her from claiming two big scalps.
In her first match against Beatriz Haddad Maia, the Spaniard needed eleven first-set break points. However, she won the tiebreak and went on to beat the number 14-ranked player in straight sets. Parrizas-Diaz followed up with an easier win against Anastasia Potapova, a player who had won in the previous round against Sloane Stephens.
For the record, the starting odds for the 31-year-old were 4.8 against Haddad-Maia and 2.75 against Potapova.
Parrizas-Diaz is a tough nut to crack, and she will be happy in her role as the underdog. In short, the pressure is on Vekic, and that’s the way we like it!
